The Open Theatre extends the existing overhang, wrapping it along the stage wall in order to gesture out toward the audience. The two stairways leading to the seating descend towards the stage, and as they approach each other fan out, a mutual gesturing of canopy and seating towards each other. For the canopies we invented a new structural system we call the D’arcies, after D’arcy Thompson’s diagrams of combinatory forces. Structure is accumulated and dispersed, uncombined and recombined, to provide mutual support and bracing, as it gestures out from the stage and up towards the seating.
